My Family name is Bullas and my father Thomas Bullas was born in Chesterfield, Derbyshire in 1914. His father, Walter was born in Dudley as were the rest of his ancestors. Walter’s parents Thomas and Emma Bullas (Emma nee Bowdler) brought their family to Chesterfield, Derbyshire around 1900 and is where Thomas found work at the newly sunk Bonds Main Colliery. Thomas and Emma raised their family here in Chesterfield as have future generations. My Grandfather married my grandmother a Chesterfield girl by the name of Eliza Ellis.
My mother Grace Miriam was a HALL and she was born at Sandy Cove, Dun-loaghaire, Dublin, Eira in 1925. Her Father was Arthur Hall and her mother Lucy Ann Bowdler, both born in England in Bloxwich, Staffordashire. However Lucy is not a Bowlder. Long story but her mother, Hannah Hawley was married to a William Bowdler who died in 1869 leaving Hannah a widow with 8 surviving children. On Lucy Ann’s birth certificate it states that her mother was a housekeeper. Lucy was born in May 1881. On the Census of that year Hannah is seen living with Thomas Stackhouse. Thomas enters her on the Census form as his wife. DNA as proved that these were Lucy’s parents. Hannah and Thomas Stackhouse go on to marry in October 1887. Hannah died in 1890
Bullas Family of Dudley
My HALL Family.
Around 1917 my grandparents, Arthur and Lucy HALL made the dangerous journey over the uboat infested Irish Sea, taking their young family to the south Ireland. In the middle of WW1 and the raging troubles as the Irish fought for independence/
This intrigues me! Question: Why would my grandfather Arthur HALL do this at such dangerous time in history? My quest is to find out.
